Preparation
What to do if you failed
Failing the exam does not close the road to a patent, a temporary residence permit or a residence permit. You can retake it, and the documents set no limit on the number of attempts.
In practice there are two limits, and both are about something else:
- Money. A repeat attempt is arranged as a new exam: booking again, paying in full again. No refund is given for a failed attempt — you pay for taking part, not for the result.
- Time. The exam and the certificate have to fit inside the deadline for filing your documents, and the certificate is not issued the same hour. Leave the exam to the last days, fail it, and there may be no time left for a second attempt.
The whole exam is retaken. The sections you passed have to be taken again: there is no way to redo only the section you failed. That is unpleasant, and it also changes how you prepare — pulling up one weak section matters more than evenly improving all of them.
What follows from this
First find out which section you failed. Results are given by section, and that is the main piece of information you have. A second attempt without going through your mistakes usually ends the same way.
Then work on that section separately, not on "the exam" in general:
- Listening is failed most often. The recording plays once, you cannot ask again, and the habit of guessing from context does not work here. It is trained only by listening repeatedly.
- Law basics is the second weak spot. It needs specific deadlines and a specific order of actions, and those cannot be guessed.
- History frightens people by its volume, but the questions are basic: state symbols, major events, holidays, the capital and the largest cities.
- Vocabulary and grammar is what trips up native Russian speakers who grew up outside a Russian school: it sounds right, but the case ending on paper is wrong.
A separate word about the thresholds. A total score is not enough: each section has its own mandatory minimum. For the patent those minima add up to exactly the pass mark — 6 for Russian, 2 for history, 3 for law, 11 out of 22 in total. There is no margin, and that is why one failed section decides everything.
Already taken the exam?
Press one button. We do not ask for a name, a score or a phone number — we only add one to the count of those who passed or failed. This shows whether the trainer predicts the real result.
Frequently asked questions
How many times can I retake it?
The documents of Rosobrnadzor set no limit on the number of attempts. But every attempt is paid for again and has to fit inside the deadline for filing your documents.
Can I retake only the section I failed?
No. The whole exam is retaken, including the sections you passed.
How many days until I can come for a retake?
It depends on the schedule of the particular centre. Ask for the nearest available date as soon as you learn your result — then you will have something to count from.
Is the fee refunded for a failed exam?
No. You pay for taking part in the exam, not for the certificate.
Does my old certificate count if I took a different level earlier?
A certificate of a higher level covers the lower ones: one obtained for a residence permit also works for a patent and for a temporary residence permit. It does not work the other way round — a patent certificate is not enough for a residence permit.
Where can I prepare so I do not pay twice?
Here, free of charge. A test on every section — with an explanation of each wrong option: not "the correct answer is this one", but why the one you picked is wrong. No registration and no limit on attempts.
The exam figures come from the Rosobrnadzor specifications verified on 8 September 2026. The booking procedure and dates are set by the institution that runs the exam: check them there.
