Registration and records
Extending registration and the permitted stay
It is not registration itself that is extended, but the period of temporary stay. Registration lasts exactly as long as the permitted stay: extend the stay and registration follows; let it end and the person must leave. So the question «how do I extend my registration» is always, underneath, the question «on what ground is the permitted stay extended».
The basic visa-free period is ninety days in total per calendar year (point 1 of article 5 of Law 115-FZ of 25 July 2002), and ninety days without a break as well. «In total» means that leaving and re-entering does not reset the counter.
Only a ground named in the law extends that period. The most common one for our readers is the work permit — the patent: the period of stay «is extended when a patent is issued to a foreign national, when the validity of a patent is extended, or when a patent is reissued» (point 5 of article 5). Then come studies, an employment contract for EAEU citizens, and documents filed for a temporary residence permit or a residence permit.
What documents to bring
What extends the permitted stay:
- A patent — its issue, the extension of its validity or its reissue. In practice: the advance personal income tax payment is made, and the stay continues; it is missed, and the patent stops being valid, taking the ground for being in the country with it.
- Full-time or part-time study — the stay is extended «until the completion of the foreign national's study in full-time or part-time form at an educational or scientific organisation» (point 7 of article 5).
- An employment or civil-law contract for EAEU citizens — Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan: the period of stay «is determined by the term of the employment or civil-law contract» (point 5 of article 97 of the EAEU Treaty).
- Documents filed for a temporary residence permit or a residence permit — the law names this among the cases where leaving at the end of the period is not required.
What happens to registration meanwhile. The registration period is tied to the permitted stay, and the extension is confirmed by the same notice — filed by the receiving party. The step-by-step procedure and the list of documents accepted are set by an administrative regulation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which we have not verified, so there is no «bring these papers» list here: it is given at the migration unit or the MFC that accepts the documents.
What follows from this
If the period has ended and was not extended, you must leave. Point 2 of article 5: a foreign national «must leave the Russian Federation upon the expiry of the validity of their visa or another period of temporary stay». The exceptions are exactly the grounds listed above.
An expired patent means an expired permitted stay. The link is direct, which is why paying for a patent is not a household detail: a missed payment removes the ground for being in the country, and article 18.8 of the Code of Administrative Offences follows — a fine of two to five thousand roubles, possibly with expulsion. From 3 November 2026 the paragraph on the fine is amended by law 294-FZ of 4 August 2026.
The ninety days are counted per calendar year, not per trip. Going home and coming back to «reset» the period does not work: the law says «in total».
Where to go next
Who files the notice and what you keep — migration registration.
How many days you have to register — deadlines.
And the patent that extends the permitted stay is not issued without the certificate — the patent exam. The deadlines and the amount of the payment that extends it — paying for the patent.
Frequently asked questions
How do I extend registration if I have a patent?
The patent itself is the ground: while it is valid, the permitted stay continues. The notice to the migration authority is filed by the receiving party.
I paid for my patent late. What now?
The patent ends on the day after the period you paid for, and with it the ground for being in the country. What to do next — the patent has expired.
Can I leave and re-enter to extend the period?
No. The ninety days are counted in total per calendar year. **I have an employment contract and I am a citizen of Kyrgyzstan. How long can I stay in Russia?** Your period of stay is determined by the term of the employment or civil-law contract — that is what the EAEU Treaty says.
I am studying. Do I have to extend something every ninety days?
No. Full-time and part-time study extend the permitted stay until the studies are completed. **I filed documents for a residence permit and my period is running out.** The law names a filed residence permit application among the cases where leaving at the end of the period is not required.
The rules were verified on 22 September 2026 against the texts of Federal Law 115-FZ of 25 July 2002 (article 5, version of 26 June 2026), Federal Law 109-FZ of 18 July 2006 and the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union. Every figure and every ground is stored together with a verbatim quotation from the law. The procedure for filing documents is set by an administrative regulation which we have not verified and do not retell here.
