School entry test for grade 1

To enrol a foreign child in grade 1, the school tests their knowledge of Russian. There is no written part at all here: 4 tasks, all spoken — heard and answered aloud. The maximum is 10 points, and the test counts as passed from 9 points.

The number that matters on this page is 9 out of 10. The child can afford one mistake aloud: the speaking minimum is 9 points, and grade 1 has no other part to make it up with.

Here you can say all 4 speaking tasks out loud and record the answer: the machine transcribes what it heard and shows what came through and what the child missed. This is trainer feedback, not a commission's mark. Free, no sign-up.

What is known for certain

The speaking part of grade 1 — 4 tasks and 10 points:

  • task 1 — taking part in a dialogue, 2 points;
  • task 2 — a monologue, 3 points;
  • task 3 — listening comprehension, 2 points;
  • task 4 — vocabulary and grammar, 3 points;

The whole speaking part takes about 15 minutes per child.

The numbers come from the FIPI specification of diagnostic materials for this grade, and the minimum mark is set by Rosobrnadzor — not from retellings or news reports.

How this is checked

What the feedback does. It compares the transcript of the answer with what the task asks for, and in reading aloud it counts how many words of the text came through. Two honest caveats follow. First: the machine hears words, not meaning. The child may have said the same thing in other words — the feedback may not count the point, which is why the transcript is always next to it: you can see what the machine actually heard. Second: this is not how the test mark is given. At the test the child answers a live commission, which judges pronunciation, coherence and whether the child can be understood at all. We do not give marks and do not promise enrolment — we show what came through. The recording is not stored anywhere: only the audio goes to the server for recognition, the text of the answer is computed by the browser itself, and there is nowhere to keep it.

Frequently asked questions

How many points are needed to pass the grade 1 test?

9 out of 10. All 10 points come from the speaking part: grade 1 has no written part.

How many speaking tasks are there and what are they?

4 tasks: taking part in a dialogue, a monologue, listening comprehension, vocabulary and grammar. All 4 are on this page — you can say them aloud and record the answer.

How long does the grade 1 test take?

About 15 minutes per child. There is no written part: the child hears the task and answers aloud.

What happens if the child does not pass?

The test can be retaken no earlier than three months later. That is exactly the time people prepare in — details.

The tasks on the site are in Russian, and the child reads Russian poorly.

The tasks stay in Russian deliberately: at the test they are given in Russian. The native language is for the parent — that is why the feedback, not a translation of the task, sits next to them.

The numbers are checked against the grade 1 specification. Tasks in the bank: speaking — 8.
