Driving licence

Traffic Rules trainer

The theory test for exchanging a foreign licence is sat in Russian, and people fail it for reasons that have nothing to do with knowing the road. A driver of fifteen years stumbles over the wording: "give way", "priority", "insufficient visibility", "the outermost position" have an exact meaning in the Rules that does not match everyday speech.

So here every wrong option is explained, not just the correct answer. And each question carries the clause number and a word-for-word quotation from the Rules: you can argue with a trainer, but not with the text of a document.

The trainer shows how many answers you got right and does not pass that off as an exam result: the result is awarded by the traffic police.

How an exam ticket is built

How a ticket is built

  • All questions are divided into 4 groups. A ticket is assembled from 4 topic blocks — one drawn at random from each group — and each block holds 5 questions. Questions may not be moved between blocks.
  • A ticket has 20 questions. Each offers between 2 and 5 answers, exactly one of them correct.
  • You get 20 minutes for the ticket, and you may answer in any order.
  • A mistake is a wrong answer or no answer at all: a skipped question counts the same as a wrong one.

When you are marked as failed

  • 3 mistakes across the ticket.
  • 2 mistakes inside one topic block — even if that is only two mistakes in total.

What one mistake gets you, and what two do

  • One mistake — you get 5 more questions and 5 minutes. The extra block is drawn from the same group where the mistake was made.
  • Two mistakes in different blocks — 10 questions and 10 minutes.
  • A single mistake in those extra questions means a fail. There is no margin left at that point.

The figures come from the ministry's Administrative Regulation (order No. 80 of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs of 20 February 2021, clauses 130 to 139). This is not a retelling from someone else's website: the text of the order was read, and the transcript is kept in the project's repository.

The regulation neither approves nor prints the questions themselves — the ministry maintains the set. We do not reprint the traffic police's tickets; the trainer's questions are ours.

A triangle pointing down is sign 2.4, “Give way”. No other sign has that shape, and that is deliberate: it is recognisable from behind and under snow. It means your road is the minor one, and clause 13.9 requires you to let through those on the main road.

Clause 13.9 of the Traffic Rules

The octagon is sign 2.5, “No entry without stopping” — again a shape no other sign has. The requirement is double: stop first, then yield. Under sign 2.4 stopping is not always required; here it always is, even on an empty road.

Clause 13.9 of the Traffic Rules

The yellow diamond is sign 2.1, “Main road”. Clause 13.9 is written from the other side: the driver on the minor road yields. But priority does not replace caution — the sign cannot stop another driver from missing it.

Clause 13.9 of the Traffic Rules

A white circle with a red rim and two cars is sign 3.20, “No overtaking”. The red car on the left is the one overtaking. Even without the sign, clause 11.1 requires you to make sure the oncoming lane is clear for enough distance; the sign removes the question altogether — no overtaking.

Clause 11.1 of the Traffic Rules

The blue square with a pedestrian on a zebra is sign 5.19.1: it marks the crossing itself. The triangular sign with the same figure (1.22) only warns of a crossing ahead — these two are confused most often, and clause 14.1 applies at the blue one.

Clause 14.1 of the Traffic Rules

These are markings 1.14.1, the “zebra”. Its stripes run ALONG the direction of traffic, while the pedestrian walks across them. In the rules a crossing is an area marked by signs 5.19.1, 5.19.2 AND/OR markings — so the markings alone are enough, and the duty to yield applies.

Clause 14.1 of the Traffic Rules

The questions are ours; the rule behind each one comes from the official text of the Traffic Rules, with the clause number and a word-for-word quotation printed next to the explanation. We do not reprint the traffic police's exam tickets: the ministry maintains them. How a ticket is built and how many mistakes are allowed come from the ministry's order and are stated separately.

Frequently asked questions

Are these the real traffic police tickets?

No, and we do not claim they are. The exam tickets are the traffic police's own work and we have no right to reprint them. The questions here are ours; the rules behind them come from the official text of the Traffic Rules, with the clause and the quotation printed next to the explanation.

Where do the ticket figures come from?

From order No. 80 of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs of 20 February 2021 — the Administrative Regulation on conducting exams, clauses 130 to 139. The government decree does not state these figures: it hands the content of the set of tasks to the ministry (clause 12 of the Rules on conducting exams). Until September 2026 we did not print them at all, because we had not verified them; a figure taken from someone else's website is a promise nobody stands behind. The order has now been read, and each figure is printed next to its clause.

How many questions are there in the whole set?

The order does not say, and neither do we. It describes only how a ticket is built — four groups, blocks of five questions — while the set of tasks itself is maintained and approved separately by the ministry.

Does the trainer work without an internet connection?

The page loads in full and the answers are checked in the browser, without a single request to a server. No scripts are needed for that: choosing an answer, the explanation and the score are plain markup.

What language are the questions in?

Russian — as in the exam. Translating them would prepare you for an exam that does not exist.

The questions were written on 22 September 2026 from the text of the Traffic Rules approved by decree 1090 of the Council of Ministers — Government of the Russian Federation of 23 October 1993. The quotations are checked against that text automatically on every build.
