Russian history: questions for the citizenship exam

This page covers Russian history only — half of the second citizenship exam. There are eighteen tasks in it, and the module has its own mandatory threshold: 12 points out of 20. A good total is not enough: fail history and you fail the exam, however well you wrote the law part.

There are thirty-six of them here — two different sets, so that the same questions do not come round every time you practise.

The list at level four is the longest of all: dates, plus rulers by period — from the fragmentation and Ivan III to Gorbachev and Yeltsin — and a separate section of names: writers, composers, scientists, cosmonauts, commanders.

Correct: of 54

Thirty-six names and dates are not learnt as a list, so the explanations group them and pull apart the pairs people confuse: Suvorov, Kutuzov and Zhukov — each to his own war; Gagarin, Tereshkova and Leonov — each to their own first; Gorbachev as president of the USSR and Yeltsin as president of Russia, although both were in power in 1991.

The explanations are available in Russian, Uzbek, Tajik, Kyrgyz, Azerbaijani and English.

Where to go next

The other module of this exam is Basics of law. The first exam is Russian language.

Both exams in full are on the page Questions and practice test for the citizenship exam.

Frequently asked questions

How many history questions are there in the citizenship exam?

Eighteen of the thirty-six tasks of the second exam. History has a mandatory threshold — 12 points out of 20.

How is history for citizenship different from history for the patent?

In volume and depth. The patent has five tasks about symbols, the capital and public holidays. Here there are eighteen, and you are asked about rulers by period, the order of events and the names of notable figures — the patent has no section of names at all.

Do I need to know writers' works?

To the extent of "who wrote what": Pushkin — "Eugene Onegin", Gogol — "Dead Souls", Tolstoy — "War and Peace", Dostoevsky — "Crime and Punishment", Sholokhov — "And Quiet Flows the Don". You are not asked to analyse the texts themselves.
